Ease of Use
If you are in the market for one of these products, you are probably here because you want something that won’t take that much time to set up. That’s why we made sure to inspect each brand to ensure that it had a setup time that was within the realm of reason. We ensured quicky and easy setup times by looking at two things- instructions provided by the manufacturer, and feedback from past users. A seller might claim that their product is easy to assemble, but the proof is in the application. We were drawn to users that provided pictures of fully assembled designs and pick styles that users claimed were fast and easy to assemble.
What we discovered is that many of the most unreliable designs out there on the market often didn’t come with a center pole. While some users are more drawn to the absence of the metal pole the runs right in the middle of the floor, designs that opted to stabilize their walls with outside PVC were often a little bit more droopy, and a lot more difficult to assemble. However, if the center pole is something that is a deal breaker for you, you may find that the poleless designs may be worth the little bit of extra time that they take to set up.

While it might not seem like an important feature at first glance, innovative and smart design can make all the difference between a night of good night sleep and a soggy night sleep. There were many options out there that offered great ventilation systems to keep campers cool during hot summer nights, but some of those vents didn’t actually help to keep campers dry. We made sure to read what users had to say about the waterproof factor of each design. These types of structures aren’t widely regarded as being the best at holding up during bad weather the way standard models can, but they should at least keep you dry. One of the problems when it comes to vents is that they simply don’t have enough of a structure to keep water from seeping in. That’s why we made sure to select designs that have a PVC lining in their vents to shield water from entering through the sides.
Something else that we noticed wasn’t standard on all models was zippered doors. We made sure to select designs that had quality zippered doors that are great about keeping critters from snuggling up beside you as you sleep. Brands that use drawstrings are a little bit more cost effective, and can work well at keeping out bugs and mosquitos, but might not be as effective at keeping out curious critters.
Capacity
This included features such as weight, dimensions, sleeping capacity, and materials used for the outside shell as well as the floor. We were drawn to designs that could sleep more campers because they could be used for a myriad of uses. If you are camping with a big group, it is nice to have one universal place for everyone to sleep to save on money. If you are camping with just a few people, the larger designs are great for multiple queen size mattresses, and some users set up tables and even build fires right inside (because the top of each unit is typically open). We also wanted to select designs that weren’t too heavy so you can pack it up into your car and be able to carry it to your destination without too much strain.
Value
One reason campers are drawn to these designs is that they are typically a little more affordable than their walled counterparts. That’s why we made sure to select designs that kept the cost low, while still using high-quality materials and designs. There were some options on our list that did carry quite the hefty price tag, but these options often held more people and had a few additional and innovative designs that made them stand out from the pack and justified their higher price point.

What we liked most about the Winterial design is that is made to ensure some pretty terrible weather conditions, it is able to hold a good deal of people, it offers a lot of insides space while still offering a lot of airflow, and it comes in at a reasonable price point.

To set it up, simply stake the center pole into place and then stake the outside walls securely to the ground. If you have a team of campers willing to help you, this unit can be set up in about 5 minutes or less.

The exterior is made from a waterproof 210T Polyester, and it also as a tarp at the top that is also rain and snow resistant. It can sleep 6 or 7 people comfortably, and measures to be 12 feet by 12 feet when assembled. It weighs about 17 pounds, which is just slightly lighter than some of the larger designs we have seen on the market.
Value:

If you are willing to pay just a little bit more for something that is going to be sturdy and reliable for all of your family camping trips, the SAFACUS design is going to be a good, solid choice.
3. Tahoe Gear
If you wanted something that was going to be able to sleep a lot of people, but you don’t have the money to spend on some of the more expensive designs, the Tahoe Gear Bighorn is going to be your solution.

It has a light green outer shell that has black accents along the top and as well along the sides and bottom. They are two small windows along the back on the other side of the door, and two small vents below those windows. The downside to this unit is that door does not zipper closed, which means there is no stopping critters from sneaking their way inside in the middle of the night.

Many users love how easy this unit is to set up. All you will need to do it secure the center pole and then fasten the panels to the ground using a series of ropes and stakes that are included with purchase. This will ensure that it stays put if the winds start to blow.

If you have been looking for something that is a little bit more affordable, Best Choice Products makes a really great design that can not only hold quite a few campers, but it comes in at one of the lowest price points out there on the market.

Putting this unit together is very quick and easy. It has a center pole that is used to hang the walls from. Once the pole is securely in place, users will then need to hold the walls down by using a series of stakes with the assistance of guy lines in case the weather starts to pick up.

This unit is made for rough weather. It has a large footprint that will accommodate a lot of campers, and it is constructed from high-quality materials.

What’s worth mentioning with this design is that doesn’t come with a center pole. Some users really love the absence of the annoying center pole the runs right in the middle of their sleeping space because it doesn’t get in the way of setting up their gear on the inside, plus it is significantly lighter than some of the other brands that utilize a heavy metal pole. Removing this pole does have its downsides, however.

It has a barn red base with white walls (which look sharp but may show dirt easily). Ease of use:
This unit will take just a little bit longer to assemble, but there are generally no complaints of users running into difficulties. Front start to finish, it should take you about 10 minutes to go from the bag to fully assembled. Simple place the poles through the proper loops on the fabric, and stake the entire unit to the ground using the metal stakes and guy lines provided with purchase.
Specifics:
Due to the fact that this doesn’t have a center pole, it is one of the lightest designs out there on the market weighs in at just 13 pounds. When fully constructed it is about 12 feet by 12 feet and can sleep up to 7 (it can also fit 2 queen-sized air mattresses).
Value:
The cost of this unit is just slightly more expensive than designs that are able to host more campers. However, if you were looking for something that didn’t utilize a center pole, and was incredibly lightweight and easy to carry, this unit might be well worth the slightly padded price tag to suit your needs.
Summary:
The downside to this design is that some users have encountered droopy walls, and they have no real way to adjust them to make them tighter. Plus, because it is so lightweight, it won’t be ideal for extreme weather or heavy rain.

There are some very appealing aspects of the Custom Norway Lavvo designs, but it isn’t without its faults and shortcomings. The design makes it perfect for most weather conditions, and it is made from high-quality materials that will hold up over time.
