Criteria Used for Evaluation
This was the most important thing that we looked at during our research. If a product claimed that it could wick away moisture- but it was also made from cotton materials- we knew that it wasn’t a product that was actually going to perform on what it claimed. There are three different types of unconventional fabrics that companies use to wick away moisture: bamboo, wool, and polyester. If you find a pair that uses any one of these materials- you are going to get a product that performs. We really couldn’t decide which material was better, because each one of that had their specific advantages and disadvantages. Materials such as wool and bamboo might be considered higher performing than polyester, but we discovered that they are a lot more difficult to care for, and often aren’t as durable and wear out faster than the standard polyester. Polyester, on the other hand, might not perform as well as the others, but it is a lot easier to care for and typically holds up for longer periods of time.
Sure, you want socks to keep you dry- but probably not at the cost of feeling scratchy and uncomfortable. We were careful to read the reviews of what some of the past users had to say about these different materials– especially ones that were made with wool. Unsurprisingly, there were some wool options out there on the market that had a reputation of being too itchy and stiff, and we avoided those brands like the plague. It’s important to keep dry, but not at the cost of being itchy and raw. Bamboo, on the other hand, has earned the reputation of actually being a little bit softer than tradition cotton. If you decide upon a bamboo option, you can rest easy that it will feel nice against your skin. Polyester designs are pretty safe as well- with only one exception. Many past users that have reviewed products that are made out of polyester find that they sometimes can fit a little too tight, and shrink up when thrown into the washing machine.
We made sure to keep an eye on the price because no one wants to spend more money than they need to. You have to be careful when shopping for specialty items because a lot of companies will try and charge you more unnecessarily so. The fact of the matter is that the materials used to make these products- wool, polyester, and bamboo- do not cost significantly more than cotton, so higher price points just don’t make any sense. We tried to select products that had competitive price points that did not eclipse what you would spend on your casual everyday designs.
Expert Interviews & Opinions
Increased moisture while running is something that a lot of runners and hikers struggle with, and it is something that can be fixed as long as you have the right gear from the start. Be sure to avoid any topical products such as ointments, creams, and sprays that claim to eliminate odor and wetness. Your body produces sweat for a reason, and if you block your glands with topical solutions- you might actually make the situation even worse. It is best to let your body react the way that it feels it needs to in regards to heat, and it is up to you to equip the right gear to prevent it from being an issue for you.
Brands that use materials use a bamboo and wool claim that they can be tossed into the washing machine with all of the other styles- but the can’t be thrown into the dryer. Unsurprisingly, many users don’t want to go the extra mile to sort their gear into separate piles, so they just wash them all together. While this will not affect the performance of your footwear, it will limit its lifespan by expediting the breakdown of the fibers. However, many users don’t mind replacing them more frequently is it saves them a little time come laundry day. Take into consideration which is more important to you. Would you prefer to wash all of your clothes together and not worry about sorting- but replace them more frequently, or take the time to wash them separately and let them air dry and have them last longer?
Other Factors to Consider
This was something else that we kept our eye on- because it is important that these products fit the way they are supposed to. When you are trying to promote adequate airflow and wick moisture away from your foot- the fabric cannot be all bunched up or not even touching some of the parts to your foot. We made sure that at least 85 percent of past users felt like the size they ordered was the right size for them.
Like we have mentioned earlier- just because you have a specific need in your footwear doesn’t mean that you have to wear basic white designs. For many- white is boring and we prefer to break out of that specific boring box. We made sure to keep an eye out for brands that offered up various color choices or designs. The Balega design was the most color option we found- but it did come at a significantly higher price point. Most brands out there offer color options that include white, grey, black, and navy- to allow you to wear something outside of boring white.
Frequently Asked Questions
q: Is there anything else I can do from keeping them from sweating so much?
We would love to tell you that there is a certain trick to keep them from soaking all of your cotton socks, but that solution simply doesn’t exist. These problems are often hereditary, so if you need to blame someone for your annoying problem, you are going to need to take it up with your family tree. However, the best solution to this problem is to keep your paws cool and comfortable no matter what you are doing. If it’s just a casual day of shopping or lounging in the summer- sandals are the perfect solution to keeping moisture from even showing its face. If you need shoes with more support for running or climbing- selecting one of the options found on our list that keeps air circulating and wicks away moisture that does develop is your best line of defense against this particular problem. Don’t fall for topical products that claim to stop moisture in its tracks- those often do no work and can even make the problem worse by clogging glands.
q: What’s so great about bamboo?
Word on the street is that bamboo is the next greatest thing when it comes to sports gear. So, what makes it so special, you ask? Well, the first thing that people like about it is that it isn’t very harsh on the environment. Bamboo is something that doesn’t take all that long to grow- making it an abundant resource. Another reason that athletes like is so much is because it has the look and feel of cotton, but it doesn’t hold on to moisture the same way the cotton does. When bamboo fibers become wet, they absorb the excess into the fibers and away from your skin. Due to the fact that it is such an effective and abundant resource, the price point is very comparable to cotton.
q: How can wool possibly wick away moisture?
We know- it sounds a little weird the wool was even mentioned on this list. When you think of wool, you conjure images of that horrible wool sweater that your mother bought you last Christmas and you wear it out of guilt even though it’s hot and itchy. However, wool is actually incredibly absorbent and perfect for wicking away moisture away from the body. However, the materials used for these products use a different type. This wool comes from a different type of sheep that is found in Australia called is called Merino wool. The fabric that is made from Merino wool is significantly lighter, softer, and easier to work with than the standard itchy wool you might be accustomed to.
q: Why can’t I just wear cotton?
It’s hard to break away from an old trusted friend because cotton is just so soft and comfortable. However, if you are engaging in any type of event where you are going to be getting wet, cotton is the last material that you want to be wearing on your body. Cotton might be light, but it is notorious for sucking up all of the moisture and holding onto it and never letting go. Wet clothes do not make for happy athletes- so you want to make sure that you leave the cotton at home on your dresser if you are going to be working up a sweat.
q: Are they going to be a lot more expensive?
Any time a product claims to do more than it’s the standard counterpart, you know to expect a higher price tag. However, that isn’t really the case with these products. Brands that use materials such as bamboo are a lot similar to the price of cotton designs. Even the products that use the special type of wool from the special type of sheep don’t really cost all that much more than standard cotton.
q: Will they work in the wintertime too?
Yes, they will even help keep your feet comfortable in the wintertime. There is a very specific frustration that comes from bundling your feet up for a winter run, and finding that sweat is turning your toes into ice cubes. It’s frustrating to realize that you cannot even escape your specific affliction even in the colder months- but there isn’t any reason to lose hope. With designs made from Merino wool or bamboo, you will remain dry and warm. However, you still might need to warm your feet by the fire after returning home, but that’s half the fun of cold weather running: warming up after you get home.
