I remember finding out the local airshow was happening nearby and the Blue Angels Fighter Pilots were making an appearance. I found a great spot across the bay and settled in to watch the show. Much to my dismay, the jets only circled over us for about five minutes total, out of a thirty-minute show. The rest of the time, they were just out of sight. If only I had found out about these monoculars before that day! I would’ve easily seen the delicate maneuvers and heart-stopping stunts in the distance. Monoculars have improved drastically over the years, with some models visualizing up to 1000 yards. Some models even act as an extension to your smartphone to allow extra zoom. Just think of the picture and video possibility with that feature!

It will go anywhere that you will! It is fog proof, water-resistant, and covered in a shock-absorbing rubber.
The scope is 20-60x60AE, and allegedly, it has a maximum field of view of 134-feet and most users report that the best views come at 250-yards or less. The minimum focus distance is 6-meters and the piece can zoom from 20x to 60x. The scope works very well with photography equipment but you will need to buy a separate adapter.
This monocular is lightweight at only 1.41-pounds. The body is made from aluminum alloy and is coated with shock-absorbing rubber. It has been designed for easy single-hand use, including focusing.
This little beaut is water-resistant, fog proof, and durable. It also has an eye lens protector and carrying case to protect the glass from wear and tear while you aren’t using it.
The length of the scope is 15.5-inches, making this slightly larger than the other monoculars on this list. However, we are impressed that it only weighs in at 1.41-pounds.
The eyepiece is angled at 45-degrees for better viewing, and there is a sunshade to help prevent glares and protect the lens. This purchase also includes a tripod, lens cap, eyepiece cap, cleaning cloth, carrying case, and manual! The pictures seem to indicate that a smartphone clip is included, it is not. While the monocular can be used with a smartphone attachment, it does not come with one.
This seems to be a very solid monocular. The only negative reviews we came across were from users comparing it to their thousand dollar models, and this being said, the lowest reviews still come with three stars. While this definitely isn't one of the cheapest options on our list, it is quite outstanding and worth the higher cost.

Easy To Hold Steady
Great Optics For Price
Construction Is Top Quality
Not the best if using during the dark
Whatever magnification or objective lens size you were looking for, Vortex will deliver for you. In four different power strengths, this monocular is good no matter what strength you get. This monocular is easy to hold steady for great viewing. It is constructed from the top quality material, and for the price, the optics can’t be beaten!Read more
Vortex is a brand that shouldn’t be overlooked. Forget the ‘toy’ like feel, the Vortex is sturdy and feels real while maintaining its lightweight attributes. Vortex understands that a lot can be demanded of outdoor gear, so they have crafted a monocular that is waterproof, fog-proof, and shock-resistant. That covers nearly everything- bring it with you on every trip you go on! One negative drawback is that this monocular has a hard time drawing in extra light so as to allow for a more quality image- it is most noticeable at dawn and dusk when you might find your naked eye sees better than your monocular. That aside, this monocular is great, easily coming in as one of our Top 3 Best Products!
10x25 but you could also buy the 8x25, 8x36, or 10x36 options as well. This scope will have sight for up to 1000 yards or 378 feet. The first number in any of those sets indicates the power or the magnification strength, the second number in those sets of numbers is the objective lens size. The Vortex Monocular doesn’t draw in light to help with visibility like some competitions will. This really only becomes a problem at dawn and dusk- your naked eye might work better than the scope of this monocular.
This monocular is fully armored in rubber.
This monocular has been nitrogen-purged and O-ring sealed to make it water and fog proof. This monocular is also shock resistant.
4.4” x 2.2” inches with a handgrip of 1.8” inches. Weighs in at 5.6 ounces.
It only includes a neck lanyard and a soft carrying case. If by ‘soft’ they mean ‘exposes your monocular to the elements’ then they are right about it. The case that it comes in, while it straps to your belt- leaves you wanting. Buying a new- not factory- the case wouldn’t be remiss.
The less you pay the less you often get. Vortex has a great mid-range priced monocular that deserves attention. There was some negative feedback from consumers, but by and large, everyone was happy with this purchase!

Criteria Used for Evaluation
How strong the scope works, and how well it does is probably the most important aspect of a monocular. How well it can stand up to use is also vital, but first, it has to be able to see what you want to see before you can worry about how well it will travel in your backpack or pocket. Scopes are specified with two numbers, in many cases in this list, 12 x 50. The first number is the magnification or the ‘power’ of the scope. The second number is the size of the objective lens in millimeters. The first few telescopes specify this definition in the numberings, but after the first three, it is assumed that you knew what the numbers indicated.
The construction was the general material that was used to craft the lens, and if it had any special design or grip features that helped to make it stand out. The best telescopes were constructed of metal but had a rubber coating or finish on it that gave the product a little more weight, and also then allowed it to be shock resistant if not outright shockproof. Some lenses were intended for single-hand use, but because of the poor grip, it may take two hands or some other form of stabilization in order to see more clearly.
Durability is one of the most important aspects that could be considered in just about every product that you might consider buying. It used to be that products would last years and years, if not generations. Now, because of the powers that be, if there isn’t money to be made in a product, they don’t want to sell it. Why produce a cell phone that is nearly indestructible and has all the features we currently have available that could potentially last a decade or longer, when you could design a phone that is just under-par with durability and only has some of the features currently available to us forcing us to buy 3-4 new phones in that same decade period? Luckily we seem to be on the upward swing of the pendulum and that consumers are demanding better quality products that will last longer, and companies are doing it! Many of these choices are among that tough and long-lasting new wave of products!
Most telescopes offer the same amount of features: a carrying case, cleaning cloth, and a neck strap was available to almost everyone- but a few of the lenses had special features that were only available to a few. Lens and eye coverings were two of those, but smartphone adaptability is one feature that was limited to only a small handful of the telescopes. What’s better than being able to see far away things as if they are up close? Taking a video of that far away target and sending it to a loved one even farther away! Features don’t make a product, but they can help greatly improve it!
Expert Interviews & Opinions
The uses of a monocular are endless! These handheld devices are a great way to entice your children to spend more time outdoors and to encourage them (or yourself) to dip into a new hobby. The size, weight, and price of the monoculars on our list are very tangible and there’s no reason not to throw one in your bag on your next outing. Get a little bit closer to nature and wildlife, while still keeping a safe distance.
Other Factors to Consider
These products are all fairly small, to begin with. Most can fit easily in your pocket or purse, and are lightweight enough that you might even forget that they are there! In some cases with these lenses, you almost wish for more weight. A few of the less expensive brands feel a little more like children’s toys, rather than a grown-ups hobby gear.
Value is the last metric because it takes into account all the other metrics and then compares it to the price that is listed- only then can you know whether a product is ‘worth’ it or not. These products are all fairly inexpensive these days (of course you could spend almost any amount you wanted to on one!), but you still want to make sure that you are getting the best monocular for your purchase, no matter how much or little you may be spending.
Once you know the metrics to use to judge each telescope, then you can start comparing it to the competition and get an accurate feel for whether a purchase is ‘worth’ it or not. Value sums up all the good and the bad in a quick refresher to determine for you why it was worthy of being on our Top 10 Best List.
Frequently Asked Questions
q: If I am a shaky person, what strength is best for me?
Consumers report that if you aren’t going to use a tripod, or stabilize your arm with anything, then you really want to stay in the 7-8 range of magnification power. Customers gave feedback that anything over 8 would be blurry while held simply by a single hand. Magnification of 12 is strong, but it is only as strong as the arm in which it is supported. If you are shaky and you know that is something you are prone to, stick around a 7-8. If you have physician steady grip, or you plan to use a tripod or stabilization of some sort most the time- then the bigger the better!
q: Are tripods necessary?
The long and short- no. However, as we mentioned above, if you are shaky or you know that you can’t hold your hand up for even short amounts of time, then a tripod may very well become a staple in your gear bag. If you opt for a monocular with smartphone capabilities then having a tripod for steady photos and videos may become necessary for you to get the right kind of footage that you are looking for. Many factory tripods are flimsy and buckle under the weight of even just the telescope. You can buy tripods available from most brands, but many are universal and you can buy a tripod with any brand and use it pretty universally. You may find that tripods are the same price or more than your lens. That becomes a question of how badly you want to have a steady view.
q: Do the photos with the smartphone capable monoculars come out like the advertised photos?
Honestly, we don’t know why the pictures show close up photos of birds on your complete phone screen. When the lens adapts with your phone it simply enhances the camera that is already there, as if it is your eye. When you put your eye up to the monocular there is a black circle surrounding the outside ring, with only the very center focused on what you are looking at. When it is attached to the cell phone camera it is no different. Therefore, the photos you see advertised on Amazon are abhorrently misleading. You cannot take a picture of any birds from any distance like any of the advertised photos show, not without further cropping and editing. That doesn’t mean that the smartphone adaptable brands are bad but just means that you will have to practice your editing skill before you can have photos as they show.
q: What’s better: a monocular or binoculars?
This is a personal preference. Binoculars allow you to see a little more dimension and space between things, but lens views aren’t obscured that much. Binoculars are heavier and don’t travel that well. But monoculars are lightweight, handy, and travel even with the biggest minimalist hiker or backpacker. Binoculars allow you to see potentially farther distances, but the lens does well all on their own. The long and short, if you are sightseeing from your back porch, car seat, or living room, binoculars are a great option. If you are looking to get up and get out- hiking, camping, sporting then a monocular will serve you well!
q: How long will they last?
That can vary, anywhere from a few users to a few years, or well beyond! The Top 3 products are all exceptional products that will last you years and years. There are a few brands that didn’t rank that high but are still Top 10 qualifiable, which will likewise last for years and years. Generally speaking, the more you spend the longer it will last. There are a few mid-range priced products on this list that will last just as long- if not longer- than the more expensive competition, so just keep an eye out for the durability section to know how well it’ll stand up to what you are asking of it.
