Criteria Used For Evaluation
We love our pets– but picking up after them can be pretty gross. While we were searching for the best products out there on the market, we made sure to check to see what others users have to say about them. A company can claim that their products mask odors and won’t leak, but the true test comes in the execution. If we stumbled across a product that users claimed leaked, or were difficult to use- we moved on to the next brand. You want to remove all of the grossness that comes from picking up after your pooch, and if it doesn’t keep your hands or sidewalks clean, then it doesn’t do the one job it is meant to do. There were a number of things that we kept in mind when we conducted our research for the best bags on the market.
Durability: Will it keep your hands clean?
When you think about it- the only thing that stands between your hand and a fresh pile of pre-used kibble is a thin layer of plastic. With this idea in mind, we wanted to make sure that the products we selected were made with durable materials that wouldn’t rip or tear when used. Products that used EPI plastics were the most durable plastics and were also pretty thick, but they were also considered to be good for the environment. When you get into vegetable based products that are able to be composted- that’s when the durability begins to decline. Before you make a purchase, determine what type of material you will feel more comfortable using.
Environment: Will it be harmful to the planet?
Any time that you use anything disposable that is made from plastic, you might wonder how harmful it is to the environment. While you want to do your part to ensure that you keep your sidewalks and parks clean, you also don’t want to add any unnecessary plastics to the already troubled landfills and oceans. We made sure to inspect the materials that were used for these products to ensure that they didn’t release any harmful chemicals into the air or into the soil. What we found is that there are two types of materials that are used to make these products. One is considered to be eco-friendly (but isn’t considered to be biodegradable) and the other is compostable and is, in fact, biodegradable. Products made from EPI plastics will break down over time if they are exposed to UV rays (sunlight) and oxygen. They won’t break down completely, but over the span of 12-24 months the plastics will begin to break apart, and they won’t release any harmful chemicals. Products made from compostable materials typically use vegetable byproducts such as cornstarch. These are ideal for the environment because they can be thrown onto a compost pile and will break down in about 6 months. While they are better for the environment, they typically don’t have the same sturdy structure of a pouch made from EPI plastic.
Design: Are they easy to carry?
Naturally, we were drawn to anything that had a fun and clever design on the outside. Sure, you could just carry plain black plastic, but why would you want to when there are so many fun and adorable options out there on the market? We loved products that had cute and clever designs on the outside, such as paw prints or pictures of funny animals. Perhaps it’s psychological, but we feel like fun and colorful options makes the unpleasant task of picking up after your furry friends a little less icky.
Additional features: Does it come with anything else that will be helpful?
We were drawn to products that offered up just a little bit more than receplicals. Many brands on the market offered up dispensers to keep your rolls as you walk. These are great because it means that you don’t have to carry around a loose pouch with you as you walk, and it also means that you will never be caught without another bag if nature happens to call twice for old Rover out on your walk. These dispensers typically fit right on to the leash and can hold up to 20 pouches at one time. Some brands even have a hook on the back so that you can hang a used pouch off of it so you don’t have to carry it all the way back to the trash can.
Other things to keep in mind
One important thing that we want you to keep in mind has to do with the type of materials used. Everyone wants to do their part in helping the planet, but the risk of purchasing a biodegradable pouch means that you might end up with a literal mess on your hands. Products made from vegetable materials have a tendency to rip and tear easily, and they often are rather thin and inefficient in masking odors. If controlling odors and ensuring that your pouches don’t rip or tear apart when you are trying to tie them is something that is super important- you might want to skip the vegetable-based options and spend your money on the EPI plastic designs. Picking up after your pooch is one isn’t everyone’s favorite part of pet ownership, but if you are equipped with the right gear when you set out for Rover’s morning constitutional, it doesn’t have to be so unpleasant.
Q: Are they really biodegradable?
You have to be careful when shopping for these products because some are labeled as eco-friendly and some are labeled as biodegradable. It is important to point out that these two terms are not referencing the same thing. Eco-friendly simple means that they are not made from materials that are toxic to the air or soil. Eco-friendly is typically referencing a material called EPI plastic. This type of plastic will slowly start to break down in 12-24 months. Unlike most plastics, when this material begins to break down it will not release any harmful chemicals into the air or into the soil. Compostable options are the true biodegradable options. These typically are made from natural plant-based materials that will decompose in about 6 months and will not release any harmful chemicals into the air or soil.
Q: Can I use them for anything else?
As a matter of fact- you can. A lot of pet owners not only use this while taking their pooches for a walk, but they also use it for their cats. Cleaning a litter box should be a daily chore- according to a vast majority of pet owners. Cats are clean creatures, and if a litter box isn’t being cleaned to their impossible standards- they might use the throw blanket at the end of your bed as their new box as they wait for you to clean theirs. Using plastic grocery bags might work in a pinch, but using smaller bags specifically designed for pet waste might be the best way to go. Plus, they are more eco-friendly than grocery bags, and many of them can be tossed right into the compost bin.
Q: What do I do with the pouch after I use it?
Typically, most users simply toss it into the garbage can at the park or when they get back home. The bag is able to contain the smell, so even if you throw it away 5 days from trash pick up, it shouldn’t smell up your garbage can. If you feel strange about sending your dog’s waste to the landfill, there is another thing that pet owners do that you might find a little strange. Some owners, upon returning home, dump the contents of the bag in the toilet and flush it away, and they throw the bag into the garbage. This method keeps actual waste out of the landfills, and into the sewers with all of the other actual waste.
Q: What’s the difference between these products and a grocery bag?
The difference should be pretty clear- one is used for animal waste and the other is used for carrying food home from the market. The kind you bring home from the market isn’t made from safe materials such as plant-based products or EPI plastics that are safe for the air and the soil. Plus, when you tie them up they still emit a foul odor. These products sometimes are scented to mask the odor of its contents, and they can sit in an outdoor trash can for a few days without smelling.
Q: What should I do if my pet ate one?
It might seem like a strange question, but you would be surprised how many times this happens. Our pets are great and lovable, but they can sure make some questionable decisions sometimes. Some of them just cannot resist the siren call of a plastic pouch filled with used kibble. So, what should you do if Fido decided to reclaimed his used kibble and eat the entire bag? Typically, these pouches are small enough that it shouldn’t be cause for alarm bells. Many pet owners that have experienced his strange occurrence have found that the animal will typically pass it in a day or two- you just need to make sure that you keep an eye on him or her. If you notice any strange behavior, or if they never pass it, it might be time to pay your local veterinarian a visit.
Q: Why can’t I just leave the waste at the side of the trail?
Let’s say you are going on a hike on a trail that isn’t very traveled, and your dog decides to leave a present on the side of the trail in the woody area. You might want to leave it there and claim that no one will step in it, and it will fertilize the soil- but you would be horribly wrong. Dog waste has a lot of nitrogen and phosphorus in it due to their diets that are high in protein, so it’s presence in the soil can have an adverse reaction than of say, cow manure (cow manure is safe because they only eat plants). Not only is it bad for the soil, but you will also run the risk of someone catching you not picking up after your pet, and suddenly you gain the reputation of the person that doesn’t pick up after your pet. Don’t be that person.
Q: Are there any downsides?
As with any product, there are a few downsides. If you are a pet owner that has trouble bending over to pick something up, you might have a little bit of a problem with this product. If you can’t bend down to pick it up, you might be better off with a classic pooper scooper. These products have long handles so that you can scoop up animal waste without the need to bend over. The downside to these products, however, is that you will be carrying it back with you and there is no way to mask the odor like you can with a bag. However, you could always bring both along. Use the scooper to pick it up, and then place it into the pouch and tie it up.
