Best Cat Repellent
You consider yourself an animal lover, but it can be difficult when those animals are taking advantage of your good nature. If you have a devious neighborhood cat that likes to stake out your bird feeders during the day, or a have one that treats all of your flower beds as their own personal litter box, you may think that there is little you can do to keep them away. Cats are notorious for doing what they want when they want, and chasing them away is only going to be a temporary fix. What we have found to be a good, humane deterrent to keep your birds safe and your flower beds tidy is a simple ultrasonic cat repellent system. Much akin to a crying baby at a restaurant, these devices emit a high pitched noise that critters just can’t stand and will drive them away from your unpleasant lawn.

Criteria Used for Evaluation
Of course, this was the most important feature of any design. Every company makes claims that their products are effective, but how will you know for sure? There are two things that we considered for each design. The first thing that we looked at was the range of frequencies that were offered. If the device only emitted one type of pitch, those designs generally did not work because different types and sizes of felines react differently to different pitches. We were drawn to devices that allowed the user to not only change the volume of each sound, but also the pitch and frequency. If you set it at one pitch and find that there are still felines stalking around your feeders, you can go out and tinker with the frequency until you find the perfect pitch to keep them away.
Another thing that we considered was the response from past users. The proof is always in the pudding. We looked to see just how many past users felt like their designs were effective, as well as the level of effectiveness.
Ease of Use
Another thing that we considered was how easy each unit was to set up in your backyard. The staked options are generally considered easier to place virtually anywhere in the yard, and we considered those before the kind that need to be hung on a post. When considering options that need to be hung from a post, we made sure that the back of the unit was equipped with a mounting hole, as well as hardware that would allow the users to mount it easily without much of a hassle. We also took a look at the ease with which users could adjust the volume and frequency. Users loved designs that had a pair of clearly marked knobs on the front of the unit that indicates the volume and frequency.
Any time you try something new and different as a solution to a problem, there is always that fear that they may not be effective and you have just wasted your money. While the devices that we selected are considered to be the best of the best, we cannot determine the fortitude of the felines for which you are trying to drive away. While most felines will flee at these devices, there are some that have been hardened by years of living on the street, and won’t be driven away even by a bull horn. That’s why we tried to stick to brands that offered some sort of refund or lower price point if you determine that the felines in your neighborhood are nonplussed by your attempts to drive them away.
All of the designs that we have found out there on the market are housed inside a very thick and water-resistant ABS plastic case that also is usually treated with a UV resistant coating so that the plastic doesn’t become weak over time. There were very few users that we found that felt that their devices stopped being as function when exposed outdoor to the elements. In fact, many users left them outside all year round even in cold and snowy temperatures and still feel that they typically worked just as well as in the hot summer months. Making sure you are able to use them all year round is important to even help in the wetter or colder months.
Expert Interviews & Opinions
Generally speaking, these devices have about a 90 percent chance or working on your pesky neighborhood felines. If you are looking for something that will be able to drive every creature out of your yard, you might be better off selecting a more affordable option that doesn’t offer the ability to adjust frequency or volume. However, if you just want to drive away from the felines without disturbing the birds, you might want to opt for a design that will have the option to set it at a certain frequency that will not bother your birds. One of the most important pieces of advice that we could pass along when it comes to these products is to temper your expectations.
Other Factors to Consider
This was another important feature, because if it doesn’t have an adequate power source, then it can’t be very effective. We like designs that have a solar panel on the top that powers up a set of rechargeable batteries because it means that it will require very little maintenance. However, our favorite options were those that had the benefit of the solar panel but also offered up the ability to plug it into a power source if your batteries happen to die and the solar panel failed to charge.
Frequently Asked Questions
q: How does ultrasonic sound keep them away?
There are certain high-level pitches that cannot be heard by the human ear that felines just can’t stand, much like the way a dog whistle works. Consider the local diner in your neighborhood that has terrible acoustics and always has a few crying babies occupying some of the booths. Would you continue to eat there even though the atmosphere tends to give you a headache? The same types of logic apply to these types of products. They don’t damage eardrums, they just create an unpleasant atmosphere that will drive them away.
q: Can I use them indoors?
Most of the options on our list have been treated with a waterproof shell and have a solar panel on the top to recharge the internal batteries, but they also can be used indoors as well if they have an additional AC or USB power adapter to plug it directly into an electrical outlet. Using them indoors can be beneficial if you have a feline that just insists on getting into things that they aren’t supposed to. If you place it next to the stove or by the dining table, it will keep them from jumping up. If you have a household with a well-behaving dog that you don’t want to suffer through high pitched noises, you can also simply set the device to only use the flashing LED lights that will startle your cat when they try to jump up onto the stove.
q: Will the work on critters other than cats?
Yes, most of these devices will work on deterring other creatures as well. In fact, many designs have features that will allow you to adjust the frequency and volume for other types of creatures. Generally, the higher the frequency, the smaller critters it will repel. These devices will work on other creatures such as raccoons, squirrels, foxes, rabbits, groundhogs, and even certain types of birds. Before you make your purchase, however, be sure that the product that you select has settings for other types of critters.
q: Why are these devices better than using a spray?
There are sprays out there on the market that are typically much more affordable than these types of devices, but they come with a few drawbacks. The first drawback is that they are great for using outdoors because you will be reapplying a new coat every time it rains. With these devices, you can simply place it into the ground and let it get to work with very little input from the user. Another drawback has to do with its effectiveness. While many think that it is a good solution to work indoors, many have found that it isn’t effective at all when used outdoors due to rain and competing odors found in your lawn.
