Cons:

Ease of use

There are few designs out there that are quite as easy to use as this design. All you will need to do once you take this design out of the box is plug it into a wall. It will immediately start to run as soon as it is plugged in, which means all you will need to do is toss your gear on to the base, and let is work its magic.

Effectiveness

Due to the fact that this is something that is going to be running all of the time, the blower isn’t as powerful as some of the other designs. It runs almost silently, but it is going to take lighter, modestly damp gear about 3 hours, and heavier gear is going to need about 8 hours. Users do like, however, that the lower running speed means that they can put their gear on this unit to keep it warm- even if it isn’t wet!

Materials

Portability

Criteria Used for Evaluation

Ease of Use

After a long day of hiking or working in cold and wet weather, the last thing that you are going to want to do is fuss with a complicated device.

We wanted to make sure that we selected designs that were incredibly easy to use, and that didn’t require you to sit down with an instruction booklet. Many of the averagely priced options out there simply need to be plugged into the wall and then left to run constantly. This way, you know that wherever your travels take you, you know that you have a warm place to hang your wet gear that will not need any time to warm up. One of the common complaints about the designs that have an on and off switch is that they take to long to properly heat up. Selecting a design that is on all the time means that you will not have to wait for it to heat up, and there will be nothing for you to do at all except hang up your gear.

Effectiveness

If it isn’t very effective, then you have a very weird shoe tree sitting in your mudroom.

There were a few things that we considered to determine what made the most effective device. The very first thing we looked at was the type of blower that is used. Convection blowers were our number one choice because these types of blowers ensure that hot (or cool) air is constantly circulating around your gear. This method not only helps to expedite the entire process, but it also helps to air our odors and bacteria that may fester in stagnant sneakers. Another thing that we considered was what past users had to say about how well the device worked. Sure, a company can make claims that their blowers are powerful and silents, but the proof is always in the pudding. We made sure to read what users had to say about each design, and would shy away from options that had an overwhelming number of users make claims that a product took to long to work. If it takes longer than about 8 hours for heavy duty gear that it dripping wet, then the blower probably isn’t all that powerful, to begin with.

Materials

Winter gear is notorious bulky and heavy, so we wanted to make sure that we selected designs with materials that could stand up to whatever you can throw at it- literally.

What we found is that designs that use unstable materials often buckle of tumble over in the face of the serious gear. Almost all of the options out there are made out of some type of molded plastic or polymer, so the real test was how durable these materials were. One easy way to determine how well a device is built is to listen to what past users had to say. Even for products that made our list, there were the occasional users that found that their gear had a tendency to cause the entire unit to topple over. Keep in mind, even the most expensive unit out there on the market only weighs out 5 pounds, so there may be some instances of instability. If there were an overwhelming number of users that just felt that they couldn’t keep anything on the top without the whole unit bending, breaking, or toppling over- we would simply move on to the next product.

Portability

Winter adventures don’t always happen at home- sometimes you take your show on the road.

We kept this fact in mind as we determined the best products for sale. What we determined, however, is that the floor models that are designed to live in mudrooms were generally the best option in terms of power, but they didn’t travel very well. Most, however, had the option of removing the arms of the base to make it just a little easier to toss in the back seat of your car when hitting the road, or simply placing into storage. The shoe-insert designs are going to be the best option for wintertime travelers. These options may not offer the same level of convection and blowing power, but they are going to travel a lot easier. Typically, these designs about just a tad smaller than a shoe, and some even have features that allow them to extend to fit into larger shoes. If you want something that is going to be lightweight and easy to carry along with you, the insert options are going to be your best bet.

Value

As always, we want to save you money when we can.

The good news about these devices is that even the high end, brand name designs are going to come in at a price point that is probably not even going to cost you as much as you spent on your hiking boots. With that said, we generally stuck to the averagely priced options that used the same type of blowers and stands. These options that run about in the middle of the road in terms of price are perfect for those that just need something that is simple, effective, and easy to use. Typically, designs that carry the larger price tags often come with a lot of extra bells and whistles that most users will admit they don’t even use.

Ease of Use

If you don't want to be bothered with setting times or adjust power levels, we suggest you select one of the designs that just plug right into the wall and are on all the time. Many often run virtually silently, and the impact on your electric bill is going to something you might not even notice.

Effectiveness

If you want something that is going to have a lot of power, be sure you opt for a design that has a conventional blower. These types of motors are best for these products because it is always going to keep the air circulating around your gear to create an even distribution of air.

Portability

There are two standard designs when it comes to these options- the floor models and the type that you insert directly into your shoes. If you are someone that is going to be traveling, the shoe inserts are going to be your best bet in terms of portability, but these options often lack a bit when it comes to power.

Frequently Asked Questions

q: Why do I need one?

a:

Everyone has been there- trying to dry out your soggy sneakers with just the use of the hairdryer. While this might actually be an effective method if used long enough, few of us have time to individually hold our hair styling unit over our shoes for hours at a time. These products use similar blowing methods for soggy gear, and they have a proper stand to hold them at the perfect angle while in use. Anyone that is outdoors for a long period of time and needs to get back out there the next day with happy feet!

q: Does using them have any additional benefits?

a:

As a matter of fact, it does! While keeping your feet warm is it’s number one function, using these products regularly even when it isn’t incredibly wet outside serves a myriad of benefits to your gear. When materials get wet and stay that way, they becoming a breeding ground for all sorts of bacteria and mold. While it is clearly not a good idea to shove your feet into moldy shoes, it also isn’t good for your actual gear. Materials that get wet and stay wet for long periods of time will become weak, and thus they are not going to last as long as they would if they weren’t wet. To ensure that all of your gear will last for years of adventures together, making sure that the materials are not wet is a great way to extend the life of your gear.

q: How do they work?

a:

Most of the designs out there on the market all use convection blowing. You might have heard of this type of heat for your oven, but what does it mean for your gear? Basically, it just means the transfer of hot air via movement. Instead of using a centrally heated coil in the heart of the unit that emits heat, these devices have a heating coil that pushes hot air up through the top of the unit and into your gear. This means that the time it takes to work will be significantly faster than if you were to simply place your gear in front of a fireplace.

q: Can I use them on other gear?

a:

Absolutely! For most of the floor models, any type of gear that can be draped over the arms will work great. If you have a soggy jacket, placing the arms in the arms will help is air out faster. Users can also put their gloves over the arms as well. Plus, it’s not just used for boots alone- any type of shoes can be placed on the arms, such as sneakers, summer shoes, or even heavier gear such as ice skates. What we have noticed, too, is that some of the more portable shoe-insert designs or hose options often come with an additional attachment that is made especially for gloves.

q: Are they portable?

a:

For the most part, yes- they are portable. However, some options are built better to travel than others. The floor model options are generally designed to live at home, but detachable arms and lightweight bases mean that they can easily be packed up into the trunk of your car for a camping trip, or simply disassembled and put into storage in the offseason. If you really want something that is going to be able to travel, you might want to check out the shoe insert designs. While these options might not have the same raw power as floor options, they are typically much smaller than a pair of shoes, which means tossing them into a suitcase shouldn’t be much of a problem at all. From what we gathered, even the most powerful and heavy-duty options don’t weigh more than 5 pounds, so moving them around and storing them shouldn’t be a problem at all.

q: Why type of power source do they use?

a:

Almost all designs out there on the market need an electrical outlet in order to operate. We did find that there are battery powered designs out there on the market- but these options are typically weak, and cannot muster enough power to really work on heavy gear. You are going to want something that is really going to be able to blow air into your gear, and design that has a constant and constant power source from an electrical outlet is going to be your best bet.

q: Does it use hot air, and will it damage my gear?

a:

Almost all options we found either only use hot air for their designs, or they sport a function to allow users to turn it off. Customers often wonder if putting their leather or plastic gear on these designs is going to hurt or damage the material. We found that very few designs out there are able to achieve temperatures hot enough to do any real damage to your gear. However, if you are worried about this, you can always opt for a design that allows users to turn off the heat setting. Keep in mind, however, that if you turn off the heat, it is going to take significantly longer to work properly, and you aren’t going to be able to experience that wonderful feeling of slipping your foot into a pair of nice and toasty shoes!

q: How will keeping this unit running 24/7 affect my electric bill?

a:

This is a common question because many of these units do not have a power switch, which means they are going to be running constantly. So, what will this mean for your electric bill? From what we could gather, it is going to have a little bit of an impact, but not by a whole lot. Keeping one of these units plugged in for an entire month typically will affect electric bills only slightly, and may set you back about the same amount you would spend on a couple of postage stamps. If it is something that you are really concerned about, we suggest plugging your unit into the outlet on the day that you know that you are going to be outside in the elements, and then unplugging it on the days you plan to be inside in front of the fire sipping on hot cocoa.
