Things we considered when selecting the best beach carts

Taking your kayak from the comforts of your garage, and driving to the ocean might seem like the only thing you will need to do before hitting the water. Yet, after you unload it off of your car, you are probably going to be met with a long journey from the parking to the water. Sure, you could pick it up and carry it- but that means you are probably going to be pretty tired before you even make it to your destination.

You could also drag it, but then you might run the risk of damaging the bottom of your boat. A good cart will ensure that you will be at 100 perfect max energy by the time you make it to the water, and your water vessel will be in good condition as well. There were a number of things that we kept our eye on when researching the best ways to get your boat to the water.

Value: How much is it going to set you back?

We know that planning a trip the ocean- especially when you live far from the coast- can be a really expensive and tedious endeavor. That’s why we tried to keep the prices as low as we could without sacrificing quality or design. Some of the designs out there on the market packed quite the wallop of a price tag, and we tried to keep those options limited. Instead, we opted for designs that have a cost that runs about in the middle of the road- meaning that they were not the most expensive items out there, but they weren’t the least expensive either. We took this approach while also keeping our eye on the materials that they used and what past users have said about their performance.

Materials used: Will it be able to make it through any type of sand?

If it can’t help you navigate your way through the sand to make it to the water, then it isn’t very functional. We found that the best types of tires for making it through just about any type of sand- loose or wet- were balloon tires. There seem to be an overwhelming number of users that preferred balloon tires- and that is why most of those designs are found at the top of our list.

Balloon tires are exactly what they sound like they are- they are big and round and filled with air. They don’t have any traction on them, which is another reason that they are ideal in the sand. Without traction, there no way that they can get sand stuck in the treads that could essentially slow it down. We didn’t just stick with balloon tires, however, because they can’t be used on a lot of various surfaces. We also added in some all terrain tires that were ideal for sand, gravel, mud, and rocky terrain. The only downside about these types of tires is that they have a little bit if difficulty in very specific types of sand.

Ease of use: Will it be difficult to assemble and difficult to load?

Luckily, a lot of these designs are pretty simple to put together right out of the box. Almost all of them can be put together without the need for any additional tools, and some simply require that the tires be fastened to the external frame. We liked to select models that didn’t require a whole lot of time to put together and didn’t come in a box with a million little pieces.

We also wanted to select designs that came with all of the tools that you won’t need to load it up, such as bungee cords, ropes, and belts. We were more drawn to options that came with bungees because the materials are a little more resilient and easy to use. A lot of designs that utilize belts often run into the problem of the fastener breaking, or the material just not being long enough.

Versatility: Can it be used in more places than just at the beach?

Taking any type of boat out of the ocean is a really exciting experience, but what about rivers or lakes? If you find that you have to park your car far away from your desired body of water and don’t want to carry it there- will your dolly be able to roll over gravel, mud, dirt, and rocks? For those instances, we looked at the tires that had a little bit more traction on them than balloon tires, and we also liked designs that didn’t require to be pumped with air. The airless tires might add a little bit of extra weight but it means that you won’t be stuck with a flat tire on your way from the car to the water.

Some More To Think About

When you are out there trying to select what design is right for you- we suggest that you look primarily with the tires. Sure, products that come with a good set of bungee cords are great, but that is something that you could pick up at the hardware store if you needed it. If you intend on using this product solely for various types of sandy terrain, then we highly recommend selecting a brand that uses balloon tires.

If you find you are kayaking in all sorts of places with various types of terrain, you might want to consider selecting a tire design that is a little more versatile- like the airless tires with a little bit more traction. We know that trips to the beach aren’t easy to come by for a lot of people who are landlocked, that’s why we wanted to make sure you were equipped with the best gear to make sure that your next trip was the best one yet.

FAQs

Q: What are the best type of tires?

There is one thing that all users can agree upon, and that’s balloon tires are the superior tires for navigating through sand. The lightweight design is perfect for making its way through even the driest sand that can even be difficult simply to walk through. If you really want to select a product that is only going to be used to navigate through sand, balloon tires are going to be your best bet. The downside for these tires lies in the fact that they aren’t ideal for every type of terrain. If you want to carry your boat across gravel, mud, or rocky terrain, balloon tires might not be ideal because they can become easily punctured.

Q: Are the frames lightweight?

Generally, most frames weight under 10 pounds. However, based upon how you load your boat onto the frame and then lift it up from the front end, there will be very few times that you will need to ever lift up your frame up off of the ground. Additionally, some frames are even able to be folded up for easy storage. Some brands out there allow you to easily pop off the two tires and fold the frame in half to make for really easy storage in your garage for the offseason.

Q: How easy is it to load?

Loading them up couldn’t be any easier. Many of the brands out there come with a series of bungee cords or belts to fasten it to the frame. Simply load up your boat onto the rubber or foam grips on the frame, and wrap the rope around the aluminum poles beneath the boat and fasten at the top.

We prefer the use of bungee cords because they are more versatile for various sizes of boats, and they are also easier to fasten, and a lot more durable. If you prefer to use bungee cords rather than the belts that were provided by the manufacturer, you can pick some up at your local hardware store. Once it is fastened in place, pick up your boat by the front end. All of the weight will be pushed to the back and placed on the frame, so all you have to do it successfully guide it to the water.

Q: Can I use them in other terrains other than sand?

Technically, you can- but it depends on what type of tires you select. The balloon tires that are designed specifically for the sand might not be ideal for a few reasons. First, they are made from a less durable rubber that is more susceptible to being punctured. If there is anything sharp on the pathway to the water- you will run the risk of getting a flat halfway there.

If you are looking for something that will work for the sand as well as other types of terrain, you are going to want to either get an airless design, or a more traditional tire that has more tread on it. The only downside to getting a tire that is all terrain is that it won’t be able to traverse very specific and difficult types of sand.

Q: Can I place the carrier in the boat with me?

Many people are a little apprehensive about leaving their carrier on the shoreline as the paddle away from it and leave it unattended. It isn’t an uncommon question to be asked, but sadly the answer is no- you cannot bring it with you. The dimensions are just a little bit too wide to be able to fit comfortably in your boat with you. One suggestion that we could make is if you are worried about leaving it unattended, you can take a few extra steps in order to conceal it.

You can either try and hide it behind something, or if there really isn’t anything out there to hid it behind, you could go so far as to bury it in the sand. It might seem a little bit drastic, but you might be surprised at how effective it will be. Just be sure to make a marker, or leave a little bit of it peaking up out of the sand, or else you will forget where you buried it!

Q: What’s better- belts or bungee cords?

You will soon find that companies that make these products use two types of fastening methods. The most common method you will find is the use of belts- these are usually found in the more affordable options. Belts are great because they are relatively inexpensive and easy to adjust, but the problem with them is that they can break easily- especially when the road becomes a little bumpy. Bungee cords, on the other hand, are slightly more expensive but a lot more resilient.

The can be a little bit of a pain to get them to stretch to fit over your boat and onto the frame, but that effort will be worth it when the road becomes a little bumpy. Not only will it securely keep your boat in place, it will also keep it from slipping off- which can be a problem with a lot of the best options. If you really want to make sure that your boat stays securely in place, and you don’t want to risk dealing with faulty fasteners, it might be in your best interest to invest in bungee cords before your trip- which isn’t usually all that expensive.
