Criteria Used For The Evaluation

Whether you are buying this for yourself for your next trip, or you are buying it for houseguests that you are hosting over the holidays– you want to make sure that you get something that is comfortable and durable. If it isn’t comfortable, no one will want to sleep on it. If it isn’t durable, your guests will find that they are waking up on the floor. Often, when a bed is durable- it often isn’t comfortable. We made sure that we found designs that were the perfect marriage of these two concepts so that you and your guests will be sure to get a really great night sleep no matter what the circumstances. There were also a variety of other things that we took into consideration as well as we conducted our research.

Materials: What is it made out of?

Most of the models on the market are made from two different types of material- vinyl or PVC. These types of materials are a good idea for these products because they are soft and pliable, but they are resilient to becoming punctured. If they do become punctured, these types of material are easy to repair using a patch kit that you would pick up at your local hardware store. You certainly want to ensure that you select a design that is made from these materials because a flat inflatable bed is no use to anyone. Some users dislike the use of PVC for their beds, so if that is something that is concerning to you- we recommend using a product that uses vinyl for the exterior shell.

Value: How much is it going to set you back?

While we wanted to ensure that we selected products that were comfortable and reliable- we also kept an eye on the price tag. Generally, they cost of these are surprisingly affordable and will cost you about the same amount as you would spend on an economy hotel room for a night. There were some options out there that had quite the hefty price tag, but we passed on them because they didn’t offer any additional features, and they were made from the exact same materials than the more affordable options.

Comfort: Will you be able to get a good night sleep?

Sleeping is the most important thing- and if it doesn’t help you get some much-needed Z’s- then it’s just a glorified pool float. We made sure to select designs that had a structured interior that used coils or other types of curved structures to keep your back and body supported, and that also keeps you from rolling straight to the middle. We also made sure that the top of the bed was made from a light and breathable material. Products that only had a PVC top have a reputation for creating a hot and sticky night sleep. Products that ensure that the top used a breathable, velvery materials ensured that there was airflow between the skin and bed so that the user didn’t become too hot.

Design: How does it look?

If you are a nature lover, looks might not be such a big factor. However, these products can be used in the middle of the woods, and they can also be used for a bed if your in-laws happen to be visiting. In the case of the in-laws- you probably will care a little bit more about how it looks. We made sure to pay close attention to the design of each product, and nixed options that looked to be inflatable pool floats that are used on dry land. We especially liked options that came with their own bedclothes because they were often the easiest to clean. We also like to select designs that came with extra features- such as inflatable pillows or bed skirts. One of the most important things was to make sure we selected models that conformed to the traditional bed sizes so that you could use the same size bed sheets at the ones that you use at home.

Other things to consider

Before you make a purchase, you need to first consider what you are going to be using it for. If it is something that will be used on a daily basis, you want to get something that uses really heavy duty vinyl- such as the Fox beds design that claims it’s vinyl is approximately 43 percent thicker than competitors. If you are buying something for backpacking trips- be sure that it has a port for a hand pump if you are traveling without a generator. A carrying case is also something that you want to make sure is included so that you won’t struggle to carry it from your car to the site. If you are buying one for house guests that are coming to visit- you want to make sure that it is comfortable and has a lot of interior support so that your guests feel refreshed and relaxed while they are traveling away from home.

FAQs

Q:   How long do they typically take to inflate and deflate?

Typically, inflating and deflating don’t take all that long- if you have opted for the types that use an electric pump that is built directly into the side of the unit. Typically, electric designs take around 3-4 minutes to inflate, with some of the slower designs takes upwards of 10 minutes. If you opt for a design that needs a hand pump, getting them inflated will likely take you a half an hour or more- depending on how much stamina that you have in your arms. Electric models might be difficult to inflate while on a trip, but they typically have ports that will allow for a hand pump.

Q:   Can I use them for everyday use?

It all will depend on the product, but most of them are designed to be used for everyday use, whether you have a house guest that just won’t leave, or are purchasing one for your first apartment as you save up for a real bed. Keep in mind, however, that using them for every day will cause it to wear faster, and you might be left without a bed if you happen to go out on a trip in nature. They also naturally lose air over the course of the night (if they don’t have a built-in second pump), so you will need to add air to it every morning for most types.

Q:   Do I have to buy special sheets?

Many of these brands and styles use sizes that adhere to the typical bed sizes- so you will be able to use the sheets that you use on your bed at home. Some of the models that are more than 18 inches deep might have a hard time holding your traditional sheets in place. In those cases, it’s worth looking to make sure that the product that you purchase have indentations that are made for gripping bed sheets into place. It is always a good idea to ensure that you have a sheet in place before you sleep on it because most companies have a top layer that isn’t able to be removed and can be a little difficult to clean.

Q:   How do I clean them?

As we mentioned, some of them can be a little difficult to clean. While some designs have a top layer that can be removed and washed in the washing machine, others cannot. In the cases where the soft top layer cannot be removed, they can be cleaned by using a bucket of soapy water and a sponge. Due to the fact that the exterior is made from vinyl or PVC and is waterproof, there is no risk of water damaging the outside shell.

Q:   Why do they often slowly lose air over the course of the night?

Many people assume that it loses air over the course of the night because there is a hole in it somewhere or it is just a defective design- but that just isn’t true. If they were designed to lose no air at all, they would likely burst. Changes in weight on the surface, as well as changes in the outside temperature, can likely be the culprit for loss of air throughout the course of the night. One way to combat this issue is to invest in a brand that utilizes a second pump that constantly pumps air into it through the course of the night. However, these pumps can often make the bed feel cold. Other things you can do to ensure you don’t lose too much air is to ensure that the temperature in the room is warm. If it is too cold, it will tend to deflate faster. Also, make sure you don’t sit on it because this concentration of weight in one place can also make it deflate faster.

Q:   What makes them comfortable?

Many of these designs are more than just vinyl that is pumped full of air. On the inside, there is often support systems in place (such as air coils) that will offer added support so that you don’t roll immediately to the middle the way you would in a hammock or a pool raft.

Q:   Which ones are better for outside?

All of the products provided are perfect for taking on a trip. However, there is one thing that you will want to keep in mind, and it’s that most of them require a power source in order to inflate them easily. Most adventurers bring along a portable generator that will work perfectly to inflate it without draining the battery too much. If you don’t typically bring a generator, you can always use a hand pump. It might take a little bit longer- but it may be better than sleeping on the ground!

Q:   Are they good for your back?

To ensure that your spine and neck stay in alignment, it is best that you use a bed that can offer a lot of back and neck support. These types of products can be comfortable to sleep on, but on a long enough timeline might not do your body any favors because they cannot provide adequate support. They are perfect in a pinch when your only other alternative is sleeping on a couch or on the ground, but they are not ideal for replacing your bed for a long period of time.

Q:   Why are they often so cold?

You might have noticed that designs that use dual pumps can be a little cold at night. This is due to the fact that the pump is constantly running circulating air to ensure that they never become flat. It is a really clever and innovative design, but it also makes the inside of the bed pretty cold. You can sidestep this instance by using a model that doesn’t use the second pump, or just be sure to use soft, flannel sheets that could block some of the coolness coming from the bed.
