We’ve just heard news from the folks over at Therm-a-Rest that they are introducing Nikwax Hydrophobic Down into their 2015 sleeping bag collection, but what the heck does that mean to you? Well it means that they will dry faster and retain more loft (puffiness!) than alternative treatments currently used.
Some over factoids for you:
- Nikwax Hydrophobic Down (NHD) is fluorocarbon free, meaning no nasty chemicals. (you can read more on Nikwax’s website here)
- Third-party lab reports indicate that products made with NHD absorb substantially less water, retain more loft, dry faster, and withstand repeat washing better than any other fluorocarbon-free treatment on the market.
- The European goose down is sourced from U.S.-based DOWNLITE that adheres to an ethical supply chain practice and a bluesign®-certified manufacturing process.
And if that isn’t enough Therm-a-Rest news for you, we can also tell you that for Spring/Summer 2015, Therm-a-Rest is introducing the Antares HD™ unisex sleeping bag and Mira HD™ women’s-specific down sleeping bag with the new hydrophobic down.
The goose down sleeping bags feature a “cutting-edge combination of technology, design, and materials that prioritize the body’s natural resting position and warmth equally.”
Weighing just 890 g (1 lb.15 oz.) and 820 g (1 lb. 12 oz.) respectively, they are the lightest three-season solutions in Therm-a-Rest’s 2015 collection. Both bags allow shoulders, elbows, and hips to move without restriction. GWA’s admin is particularly looking forward to putting these claims to the test as she whirls like a dervish in her sleep, often resulting in unintended strangulation and claustrophobia!
The bags will be available in stores from January 2015, but GWA are hoping for a sneaky peak at this weeks big Outdoors bash in Friedrichshafen.
