Planning for a summer trip away which is multi-activity and space is in short supply calls for clever packing and multi-use equipment and clothing. So when the Salomon X Alp arrived it ticked all the boxes as it is very cleverly designed for simplicity of use whilst still boasting all the ‘bells and whistles’ needed for this kind of trip.
My husband had spent hours (as men do) researching the exact pack he needed for the alps suitable for climbing/mountaineering & hiking which had to meet certain exacting criteria. His examination of my Salomon X Alp immediately threw up some features he didn’t have on his which included the separate zipped compartment on the bottom which is reinforced to carry crampons – a simple but brilliant idea – keeping them separate from the rest of your gear and yet easily accessible. He was also very impressed with the easy access into the pack with a zipped top section and a zip running down the back so quick access to things in the bottom of the pack without getting everything out.
I used this sack a lot during our month long trip in the alps and it proved invaluable – it was just the right size and no matter how much I put into it (it holds a lot more than you would think) it always felt comfortable due to its Airvent harness system – extra light adjustable sternum straps , wide belt and compression system designed specifically for high mountain conditions. It also has an internal bladder system compatible with any 2L bladders perfect for long hot days out.
I have used it for single days out and hut to hutting loaded up with axes and poles (2 different systems for carrying ice axes and poles) and for once the zipped pocket on the waist belt was big enough for my camera and lippie – husband not as excited about this feature!
It is also a great cragging pack and I have used it on a bike as well as ski touring so all in all a very versatile and well thought out pack which has become a very important part of my kit list and will be going on many more travels as well as regular daily use.
