What converted me to Nordic Walking is that it improved my walking – I get out and about on two feet a lot – having a dog tends to do that. I’ve always been a fast walker but it transpires that I’ve not been very efficient and my posture tends to make people wince. Adding these poles has straightened my back, and my stride and gait have improved no end and going up hills is now child’s play!

VSSL Supplies – Emergency kit

The VSSL is a bit of a jack of all trades, and is only as useful as you know how to use it – so it’s worth taking time to read the little instructions book. It’s also worth noting that there are other flavours of VSSL – a 1st-aid version and an emergency shelter version – for more specific needs. And perhaps most useful of all for people who DO know what they’re doing, they sell an empty version which still has the torch and compass at each end, and is waterproof and drop resistant.

Klecker/CRKT Nathan’s Knife Kit

Minnie, aged eight, made short work of putting it together and, interestingly, treated it naturally with respect as though it was a real knife. Neat psychology. She needed a little help in pushing through the wooden dowels as they were so tight but she made the point they had to be, “Or else the knife would fall apart”. Good job the ‘helpful’ adult didn’t start sanding parts.
