We’ve recently become more interested in bird-spotting when we go out with the dog. There’s an impressive number of Skylarks twittering away in the field above our house as I type this and we spotted a Red Kite last week. But walking with a smelly bounding hound we’re never going to get that close to the wildlife so we sometimes need a little help. And that’s where the cheap and cheerful Luger MM 6 x 18 comes in.Read more
About 10 minutes ago I boiled up some Chicken Korma in the funky, ultra-light Minimalist cookset from GSI Outdoors. About 30 seconds ago I burnt my tongue on the sauce, so it’s safe to say that the insulating neoprene jacket is working well. Anyone got an ice-pack?Read more
Brilliant British made components. Fairly pricey, but built to last. I’m now the proud owner of two pairs and I wouldn’t want to swap them for anything else. A reasonably light weight: Front 185g (QR) Rear 285g (QR) and convert to different axle sizes easily.Read more
I absolutely love the danger and risk of using a stove that could remove my eyebrows when it’s turned off. It’s built well and packs down nice and small for backpacking, and the ability to use a variety of fuels is great for expeditions or travelling. It’s easy to use (once you’re familiar with it) and priced keenly with its competitors. I can’t find any reason to fault it.Read more
There’s a large vertical zippered pocket on the front of the Freeflow 35+8. Inside it has a webbing retainer pocket. It’s the shape of the black patch on front – the only thing I can think that would fit would be a Ukelele.Read more
omfortable casual shoes which are a cut above trainers in terms of support and protection, but not hiking shoes proper. They look great and are as happy in the pub as on the trail. A full GoreTex membrane is a bonus. Recommended for those who want a good-looking all-rounder that isn’t going to get too extreme.Read more
I admit that my first thought on seeing the hybrid Buff was to question what the point of it was. It was neither here nor there. Not black nor white and sort of pointless seeing as their are two perfectly good designs available already.Read more
The Sole Casual Flips are more than ‘just’ a flip flop. In the sole, Sole have built a whole host of orthotic features to support your feet properly as you walk. There is a toe-bar, deep heel-cup, metatarsal supports, arch supports… the whole shebang! Hence the price: £55.Read more

Lightweight, packable and well-fitting jacket which is as happy shoved at the bottom of a daypack ‘just-in-case’ as it is being worn on a hike through a monsoon. A lot of work has gone into the fit and finish of this jacket and it shows. It looks great on and feels feminine.Read more
As part of Gelert’s new Beyond range – designed for more discerning outdoor active people than would necessarily purchase their cheap’n’cheerful camping goods – the Strider comes in with some serious specs.Read more
I want to start with this definitive statement: These are the most comfortable trail shoes I’ve ever worn.
I’ve not worn anything made by Carn before this month, so it was interesting when they contacted us and asked us to test something. We let them choose what to send over and what arrived surprised us – I was expecting boots and the Cobras look more like running shoes.
I opened it up, waiting for my single chocolate treat to fall out and instead revealed this diminutive keychain tool which I admit to sniggering at and deriding as a bit of a “girl’s tool”. Nevertheless, I stuck it on my house keys and now 10 weeks later I’ve decided that it’s either the perfect every-day multitool, or that I’m a bit of a girl…Read more

1000 Mile socks use a double layer of material, so that it’s these two surfaces that rub over each other during walking, and save your foot from rubbing on the shoe. The idea being that the sock becomes an artificial blister itself.Read more
